Endodontics (Root Canals)

A common misconception is that a root canal is an uncomfortable procedure. Actually, root canals are similar to having a cavity filled, producing minimal discomfort.

Common causes for the need of endodontic treatment:

  • Inflamed/infected tooth pulp (the nerve and blood vessels in the tooth)
  • Severe sensitivity to hot and cold elements
  • Extensive Tooth decay
  • Chipped or broken tooth
  • Trauma or injury to the tooth
  • Swelling or tenderness near the infected tooth
  • Repeated dental procedures on a tooth

Please contact our office for an evaluation if you experience any of the symptoms above.

Many root canals can be done in our office; however on some occasions it is necessary to refer a patient to an Endodontist. An Endodontist is a specialist in the area of soft tissue inside the tooth. Endodontists, receive advanced education after graduating from dental school and typically only deal with endodontic-related problems.

Sometimes, even after a root canal, an infection may develope or persist.  To clear the root of infection an apicoectomy may be required.  During an apicoectomy, the tooth's root tip is removed, along with the infected tissue.  A filling is then placed to seal the end of the root.  To learn more about an apicoectomy, please watch the video below.
