Implants

Dental implants are artificial tooth replacements that provide a wide range of tooth replacement solutions including:
Implants are often as strong as the patient's original tooth. The implant or artificial root is placed into the jawbone under local anesthesia, then allowed to heal and integrate with the bone. Once the healing process is completed and the jawbone is attached to the implant, the patient retuirns to the dental office where the implant is fitted with the new tooth. This process generally takes anywhere form three to eight months, depending on healing and the complexity of the situation. One of the best uses of implants is stabilizing a denture in someone's mouth. By placing two or more implants and allowing the denture to attaching to the implants (through specially made attachments), a patient can experience a whole new life without having to worry about a denture being displaced while laughing, eating or other daily activities. Dentla implants can last for decades when given proper care. Patients are advised to visit their dentists at least twice a year to ensure the health of their teeth and implants. There are usually 3 reasons that an implant will fail (the implant loosens from the jawbone). First, somking can reduce the body's healing and integration of the implant by up to 50%. The second most common reason for an implant to fail is from occlusal trauma (hitting too hard on the implant when teeth meet). The thrird most common reason for implant failure is periodontal (gum) disease. Although proper oral hygiene is always recommended for maintaining good dental health, it is especially important when a patient has had a dental implant placed. Bacteria can attack sensitive areas in the mouth when teeth and gums are not properly cleaned, causing gums to swell and the jaw bone to gradually recede. Recession of the jaw bone will weaken implants and eventually make it necessary for the implant to be removed.
